A superb and increasingly rare example of one of the most desirable sporting E30s – the BMW 325i Sport M-Technic 1.

Finished in timeless Dolphin Grey (Delphin) Metallic with an exceptionally well-preserved and virtually unmarked houndstooth check Sport interior, this is a wonderfully original example of BMW's pre-facelift E30 Sport.

The M-Technic 1 Sport was offered for only a very short period, from late 1986 until 1987, before being replaced by the later M-Technic 2. Believed to be one of only around 290 examples produced in this specification, surviving original cars are now particularly difficult to find – especially examples that have escaped the rust, modification and hard use suffered by so many E30 Sports.

The Sport was considerably more than simply a cosmetic package. Factory specification included the distinctive M-Technic 1 aerodynamic body kit and rear spoiler, limited-slip differential, M-Technic sports suspension, close-ratio five-speed manual gearbox, 15-inch BBS alloy wheels, Shadowline exterior trim, M-Technic steering wheel, sports seats and anthracite headlining.

At its heart is BMW's legendary 2.5-litre M20 naturally aspirated straight-six, producing around 170hp and delivering exactly the smooth, free-revving character and wonderful soundtrack for which six-cylinder BMWs of this era have become so loved. Combined with rear-wheel drive, the close-ratio manual gearbox and LSD, it remains an exceptionally rewarding driver's car more than three decades later.

What makes this particular example especially appealing, however, is its history and originality.

The car has had just three registered enthusiast keepers from new and is accompanied by a substantial history file documenting a lifetime of careful maintenance. It is evident both from the condition of the car and its documentation that it has been cherished throughout its life.

The body is completely rust-free, presenting beautifully in Dolphin Grey Metallic, while the original houndstooth Sport interior is remarkable for its condition, with none of the heavy bolster wear so commonly found on E30s today.

Importantly, the car remains completely unmodified and faithful to its original factory specification. The only departure from standard is a high-quality stainless-steel manifold-back exhaust system, which complements the M20 straight-six beautifully without detracting from the character of the car.

Finding an E30 325i Sport is no longer particularly easy. Finding an early M-Technic 1 with excellent provenance, just three long-term enthusiast keepers, superb houndstooth interior, a rust-free shell and no history of the modifications that befell so many of these cars is considerably harder.

This is a beautifully preserved example of what many enthusiasts regard as one of the sweetest E30 combinations of all: the compact pre-facelift chassis, naturally aspirated straight-six, manual gearbox and limited-slip differential.
