Overview
1953 Peugeot 203 Cabriolet
A beautifully restored example of one of the rarest and most elegant post-war Peugeots, this 1953 Peugeot 203 Cabriolet presents superbly throughout and is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
Introduced in the aftermath of the Second World War, the 203 was an enormously important model for Peugeot and became renowned for its durability, refinement and advanced engineering. While the familiar saloon was produced in large numbers, the elegant Cabriolet was built in very limited quantities, making surviving examples particularly sought after today.
This example has undergone an extensive restoration, including body and paintwork completed by Carrosserie FORT in Alzonne, France, and today presents in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition.
Finished in an elegant light grey complemented by a beautifully retrimmed deep blue interior and matching blue hood, the colour combination suits the graceful lines of the 203 exceptionally well. The bodywork is beautifully presented, with excellent panel fit and a deep, consistent finish throughout. The extensive period chrome trim, distinctive horizontal grille, hubcaps and delicate exterior detailing provide exactly the understated elegance associated with early-1950s French design.
The interior has been restored to an equally high standard. The blue upholstery presents beautifully, complemented by matching carpeting and door cards, while the body-coloured dashboard, large ivory steering wheel and wonderful central Jaeger instrument cluster retain all of the charm and simplicity of the original design.
The new dark blue mohair convertible hood is also in excellent condition and fits neatly when raised, while with the roof lowered the 203 becomes an exceptionally elegant four-seat open tourer.
Importantly, this is not simply a car that presents well cosmetically. It is mechanically excellent and drives superbly, with the relaxed and characterful road manners that make the 203 such an enjoyable classic to use. Recent attention has included rectification of steering play identified during its Contrôle Technique, with the necessary components replaced.
The car has clearly been restored with considerable care and subsequently cherished. It has also been displayed at MEET Toulouse, reflecting the quality of the finished car.
With its combination of rarity, elegant coachwork, excellent restoration and charming driving experience, the 203 Cabriolet represents a particularly appealing alternative to the more familiar British and German convertibles of the period.
A superb example of a genuinely rare Peugeot and a wonderfully evocative piece of 1950s French motoring.
